J14 news

News from 2007 – 2008

Birmingham Regatta, Birmingham

Following a ridiculously early departure from school, the Hampton J14 squad in its entirety headed North for Birmingham regatta. It was always going to be a tough day with Shrewsbury entered into all of our races (they look 16, not 14!)

Sadly we didn’t collect any silverware, but the day was very useful for the boys and the coaches.

The J14 squad is now gearing up for Poplar regatta (11th May), Thames Ditton (17th May) and finally the big one – the National School’s regatta (23rd – 25th May).

Kingston Head of the River, Kingston-upon-Thames

In their final J14 head race 3 mixed, scratch crews show just how much they have improved on their previous races. The A-crew won the J14 octuples, the B-crew finished 5th and the C-crew finished 9th.

The A-crew seemed unfazed by the 5.3km course, and raced hard from the start, passing 4 crews on the way, to finish the race with a very convincing win leaving over a minute between them and 2nd place KCS Wimbledon.

The B-crew had an excellent race, and despite clashing with two other crews passing under Kingston Bridge (3 octuples just don’t fit through one arch of the bridge!) managed to finish a very creditable 5th place. The C-crew had a similar mishap, managing to lose a blade temporarily, but despite this, they finished 9th overall.

Hampton Fours and Eights Head, Hampton

In the J14s first ever race in Hampton School colours, the squad performs well, with the A-oct finishing 2nd in their category.

The J14s took to the water for their first ever race in Hampton School colours. Despite their nerves and worry, the squad performed well, with the A crew finishing in 2nd place – their highest ever placing in this event. The B and C crews raced well, although a lack of race experience saw them finishing 9th and 12th respectively. The J14 quads finished 5th and 6th in their category.

National Junior Sculling Head, Henley-on-Thames

The J14s raced well in their first step up to a major competition, although some “unfortunate events” prevent the results showing the true quality of the crews. Out of 33 crews, the B crew finished 11th, the A crew finished 18th and the C crew 23rd.

The Junior Sculling Head showed some of the best and most determined racing from the Hampton J14s, highlighting the huge improvements made since September. The A-crew got off to a flying start and were rapidly gaining on KCS Wimbledon (who finished 6th), before suffering a crab reducing them to a crew of 7 for the remainder of the race. Despite rowing over half the course with only 7 men, they still managed to finish 18th overall. It is likely, that without the crab, the crew will have finished in the top 5… a lesson to learn for next time!

The B crew put in a very strong and gutsy performance, which saw them finishing 11th overall, beating many A-crews and finishing as the 3rd fastest B-crew (0.1 seconds behind the 2nd B-crew!) The C-crew raced well, finishing 23rd overall and 2nd of the C-crews.

Winter kit

The winter is now once again on its way, and the river is a cold place to be at this time even more so when it’s wet and windy. It’s really important that all boys have suitable rowing kit, which in essence means tops with long arms, trousers with long legs, hats and plenty of layers (no gloves!) There are a few specialist rowing companies that provide good kit, although this can be expensive and cheaper brands often do the job just as well!
