News from 2008/09
The senior team of Nick Ashbourne, Amish Patel, Chris Hutchinson, Will Round, Chris Lewis, Mark Winterburn, Ed Smith and Miles Horn competed in a variety of matches including an inter-school match organised by Tiffin in September; the King’s Cup on Wimbledon common in October where Chris Hutchinson was our first scorer home in 51st place from a field of over 130 athletes, while in mid-November the team of Ashbourne, Smith, Hutchinson and Patel finished seventeenth out of thirty-one teams teams in the RGS Guildford Haskell Trophy relays. At the end of November Magnus Assmundson defeated Ed Smith to win the Golden Mile championships. In early December the Hampton senior cross-country team competed in the prestigious Judge Cup in Richmond Park, run over a 4.5 mile course. The team, led home by Ed Smith, Chris Hutchinson and Nick Ashbourne finished an excellent third place. A week later Hampton hosted the annual Hampton-St Paul’s twenty-four minute Paarlauf involving forty teams. The Hampton U15 ‘A’ team, consisting of Ben Chapman, Declan Ryan and Tom Turner, ran very well to finish second in their age group with the B team following closely behind to achieve an encouraging third. The U17 team, consisting of Ed Smith, Jack Walker and Miles Horn, successfully defended the title they won at St Paul’s School last year, to claim gold medals once again. Finally, the U20 team, consisting of Magnus Assmundson, Nick Ashbourne and Chris Hutchinson, won the bronze medals in a race won by Tiffin school.
The Richmond Schools’ Cross-country championships were held in Richmond Park at the end of November.
The First Years performed superbly to win their age group, led home by Ethan Ijaz in first place, closely followed by Jim Philipson in third place.
The combined Second and Third Year team comfortably won their age group, with Declan Ryan our first scorer in Third place followed by Ben Chapman (4th), Tom Turner (5th), Mark Parsons (6th), Matt Benstead (7th) and Joe Battle (8th).
The combined Fourth and Fifth Year team also won their age group, led home by Jack Walker (1st), Ed Smith (4th), Luke Wilson (5th) and Miles Horn (7th).
All of the above athletes were selected to represent Richmond Schools in the Middlesex cross-country championships at Harrow school in February.
Representing Richmond in the Middlesex Schools Championships;
Ethan Ijaz (10th), Jim Philipson (32nd) and Jamie Campbell (34th) in the U13 race; Ben Chapman (9th), Declan Ryan (15th), Mark Parsons (28th), Joe Battle (32nd) and Matt Benstead (33rd) in the U15 race; Magnus Assmundson (15th) in the U17 race; Magnus Assmundson (16th), Amish Patel (18th), Chris Hutchinson (23rd), Nick Ashbourne (25th) and Mark Winterburn (30th) in the U20 race. These athletes helped Richmond to win the overall County Cross-Country championships
Ben Chapman was selected as a reserve to represent Middlesex in the All England Schools championships in March in Loughborough.
In February the following athletes competed in the Richmond and Kingston trials of the London Mini-Marathon and went through to the big race on the London Marathon course in April.
15-17 age group: Amish Patel (38th), Ed Smith (94th), Will Round (122nd), Luke Wilson (131st), Chris Hutchinson (133rd), Magnus Assmundson (172nd).
11-14 age group: Ben Chapman (93rd)
11-12 age group: Ethan Ijaz (95th), James Southall (135th)

Wednesday 26 Nov Hampton Golden Mile Championships were won by Magnus Assmundson who just outsprinted Ed Smith.
Friday 28 November Richmond Schools’ Championships in Richmond park
First Years won their age group, the race was won by Ethan Ijaz of 1J with Jim Philipson of 1L finishing 3rd.
A combined Second and Third Year team won their age group, with Declan Ryan (3F) our first runner home in Third place, closely followed by Ben Chapman (3A) and Tom Turner (3J).
The Combined Fourth And Fifth Year team won their age group, in a race won by Jack Walker (5B) , he was supported by Ed Smith (4H) in 4th, Luke Wilson (4H) in 5th place and Miles Horn in 7th.
Hampton School successfully defended the overall Boy’s competition they won last year!
