Hampton pianist plays with Chinese superstar

Harry Baker was one of the outstanding young British pianists chosen to play alongside Lang Lang at the Royal Festival Hall.

Harry Baker was 1 of 100 young pianists, ranging in age from 5-24, taking part in the 'Massed Piano Day' at the Festival Hall.

The young musicians were there to take part in a recital alongside Chinese pianist, Lang Lang, whose talent and vibrancy has made him a global superstar.

In keeping with Lang Lang's flamboyant image Harry and the other young musicians played on 50 Steinway Grand Pianos, specially brought in for the occasion.

After rehearsing for two days they then performed a concert to a sell out audience at the Festival Hall.

Harry says it was a wonderful experience:

“It was fantastic meeting Lang Lang and playing with so many great pianists from across the country.  We played 3 pieces that had been arranged for a massed piano orchestra – Beethoven’s 5th Symphony(4th movement), Schubert’s Marche Militaire and Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner.  The conductor, James Lowe, had great fun trying to keep us all in time, as many of the pianists would only be used to solo rather than orchestral playing !”
