Second Year Bulletin – 11 May 2012

As Fifth Year and Lower Sixth boys go on study leave, the Second Year continue to prepare for their exams whilst managing to find time for the usual range of co-curricular activities. Ed Owens joined the Hampton Jazz Band to play a concert in Kingston at the weekend; he is the youngest member of the group and really enjoyed his first public performance.

On the sporting front, the U13A Cricket team beat Dulwich in a very tight match. Captain Max Vyvyan said the star players on the day included Harry Fuller, Matt Walker and Luke Minshull – others tell me that Max himself played a crucial role in bowling so competently. In terms of Tennis, Alex Marsland, Daniel Connell, Christian Kerton-Johnson and Florian Hagmann represented the School this week . They played against Parkside and held their own but ultimately lost; as Daniel Connell commented, ‘we played well but they played better’ but he confirmed that it was a fun experience nonetheless!

Mrs Owen enjoyed her duty monitoring the Lower School lunch queue this week due to the entertainment provided by a few Second Year boys. Oscar Cloud, who we previously reported has demonstrated his tricks on television, joined Angus Shennan in impressing others with their impromptu magic show. Another performer was Isaiah Coco-Bassey who told a number of jokes – clearly a comedian in the making!

A couple of boys had merit certificates signed off this week; Silver certificates for 30 merits were awarded to Harry Robinson and Chin Yew Yeoh. Well done, boys – we would like to see more of you coming forward next week!

Good luck to all the boys as they sit their language oral exams next week; I am sure there will be plenty of practising going on over the weekend! Have a lovely week and do email h.cheshire@hamptonschool.org.uk if you have anything to report.

Start of Summer Term Letter

Dear Second Year Parents

I hope you and your families have all enjoyed a restful Easter break. This term, as always, promises to be a busy one and I would just like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the key activities and events over the coming weeks.

As you are aware, next Wednesday is Parents’ Evening and your son should have brought home your appointment list at the end of last term. If, for any reason, you did not receive a copy then please contact your son’s Form Tutor as soon as possible.

Over the next couple of weeks, your son will also have the opportunity to list up to five friends he would like to be in a form with next year. As you probably know, we always have around sixty prep school boys join us in the Third Year and we take the opportunity to change the forms to accommodate the new intake. I will explain more about this process during my Parents’ Evening speech, but for now, please be assured that I will try to place boys with at least one of the other pupils he lists.

Inevitably, the end of year examinations are also just around the corner… In fact, this year they are even sooner than usual, with exam week looming before the Half Term break. I hope your son managed to follow the advice offered by his Form Tutor before the Easter holiday and that he took the opportunity to get his books and notes in order and has come back with a revision strategy in place. During PHSE sessions, we will be looking at various revision strategies and exam techniques to help the boys deal with the pressure of working under timed conditions.  Of course, the best revision is active rather than passive and, despite what the boys may say, the earlier you start the better. I have included the Second Year examination timetable below for your convenience - each day is split into three sessions, two before lunch and one after. The boys have already received a paper copy of this timetable.

In addition to all this hard work, there will also be plenty of opportunities for the boys to get out and about and enjoy a number of activities. These include the Geography Field Trip to Cuckmere on Wednesday 20 June, the Maths Probability Show on Friday 29 June and the History Tudor Day on Monday 2 July. There will also be a number of Founders’ Day activities for them to enjoy in the last week of term, as well as the Swimming Gala on the last morning of the term.
Mr Partridge and I will present Lower School Evening on Tuesday 3 July in the 450 Hall, where we will give a review of the year. The Headmaster will present prizes to those pupils who have excelled in various academic and co-curricular spheres this year. Prize winners will be notified shortly before the evening about when tickets will become available. I will provide more details about this nearer the time, but please note that the ceremony is not compulsory for boys who do not receive prizes.

Just before I sign off, I would like to ask you to remind your son of the following sensible points he must consider, in order to be safe on the road near the School when travelling on foot:

  • Boys should use the zebra crossing provided if they need to cross Hanworth Road, even if it means going a few yards out of their way
  • Boys should always look carefully both ways when crossing the road, even when using the zebra crossing
  • Boys should stay on the pavement at all times unless crossing the road at the zebra crossing – they should not step out into the road to overtake slow moving pedestrians
  • Boys should not walk along the pavement five or six abreast – it is not wide enough to accommodate such numbers
  • Boys should remain alert and aware at all times – they should look around them and focus on potential hazards, rather than being distracted by conversations with friends, mobile phones or the need to rush to catch their coaches

I make no apology for reiterating these points yet again – the risks the boys take when walking near the School at these busy times are often frightening to see and I hope this reminder will serve to encourage them to take more care.

As I said, it promises to be a very busy, but hopefully enjoyable term.  I wish all of the boys well in their examinations and I hope that every one of them will be ambitious about what they can achieve and will be keen to finish their Second Year on a high note.

Yours faithfully
Jillian Owen
